Clean Radiator with Tips for Dust, Discoloration & More

Over time, radiators as well as all other things in the budget dirty. When smoked in the room, the radiator turns yellow and dust penetrates into the smallest cracks and holes. This is very unpleasant especially with old radiators. But the cleaning is quite complicated, because it is difficult to get to most places.

We would like to give some tips that you can use when your  clean radiator want.

How to clean the radiator?

The best time for radiator cleaning is the time before and after the heating period. If you plan to clean the heating system even in late summer or autumn, remember that during the heating season, dust and dirt are again attracted by the heat during winter and you will probably have to do a further cleaning after the heating period. The reason for this is also the air circulation caused by the heat of the radiator. The cleaning of radiators with ribs is easier, because you get into the crack with a duster or even a vacuum cleaner, but it also has many more cracks and openings that can contaminate. In the newer models the collected dust is not visible. It collects itself in the covered interior of the radiator. However, this affects over time the performance of the radiator, which can be up to four times weaker. Therefore, it is important that you regularly clean the radiator. But how?

Clean radiators – Tips

How to clean radiators inside? Radiators inside dust can be cleaned in the newer models only by removing the covers. Some screws may need to be removed. On some models, the covers are even attached. Now you have three ways to remove the dust from the inside. You can clean the radiator of dust by using a special radiator brush. This is also called slat brush.

Remove dust with a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner

So that you do not have to go out on the way to buy a brush, you can use a hair dryer as an alternative. With its help blow the dust from top to bottom out of the radiator. Now tell yourself that the dust flies through the whole apartment. And you are right. For this reason, first place a damp cloth or sheet under the radiator, which catches the dust perfectly. You can also use this tip for old radiators. The vacuum cleaner is an equally good helper when it comes to cleaning the radiator. All you need is a suitable attachment that allows you to get inside the heating.

Clean the radiator effectively

And while you can even put your hands on normal radiators, convectors should only be cleaned by professionals. You can easily clean the convector with a vacuum cleaner and, if necessary, wipe the surface yourself. However, the convector should only be opened by a specialist who is well versed in the cleaning process, without damaging the interior.

Clean household tips for the radiator

Another variant is the cleaning of the radiators with a steam cleaner. If you want to clean the heater in this way, remember that the water dripping down from the radiator can be quite dirty depending on the amount of dust. In this case, best place a document. An old sheet is well suited for this because it sucks up the dirty water to the majority. Also cover the wall behind and around the radiator to avoid splashing. This variant to the radiator clean seems very elaborate, however it is effective. At the same time, the steam also kills bacteria and dust mites. You should not keep the steam cleaner too close and too long against the slats. Due to the high temperature of the steam, the lacquer could possibly also flake off.

Clean radiator surface

But dirt also collects from the outside, which should be removed regularly. Radiators in the kitchen, for example, become colored over time by the fumes and by fats, which are thereby carried through the air. Radiators clean from the outside can best be used with oven cleaners or greasers. However, discoloration and soiling should be relatively fresh. Finally, wipe with a damp cloth over the surface. You may also use a steam cleaner. In the case of a smoking apartment, nicotine causes discoloration due to deposits, which unfortunately can not be removed with cleaners. In this case, you can simply re-heat the heating. It will look like new.

Replace radiator

Select a time outside the heating season to remove the radiator. The radiator should be prepared by gently grinding the surfaces with abrasive paper. This guarantees that the new color will be better adhered to later. Have a look at the right color in the DIY store. It should be absolutely heat-resistant. In addition, the new color does not necessarily have to be a classic white or beige. In the meantime, there are a variety of color nuances and colored radiators are currently very trendy as they embellish the interior. We recommend acrylic lacquer. This has several advantages. On the one hand it is low in odor and on the other hand more environmentally friendly and it does not yellow as quickly as many other varnishes, including the commonly used alkyd resin varnish. The large areas of the heater should be painted with a roller. Smaller elements such as pipes, fittings and brackets are more difficult to work with the roll, which is why a brush with natural bristles is more practical.
