San Angelo was first founded as a frontier military post in 1867 by the United States Army. It served as a strategic point to protect settlers from Indian raids, and it soon developed into a ranching center. During the twentieth century, San Angelo experienced economic growth due to oil production and the establishment of manufacturing plants.
